How to Choose the Right Air Purifier

With dozens of options on the market, choosing the right air purifier comes down to five key factors. Here's what our experts look at when evaluating any machine.

Room Size & Coverage Area

Match the purifier's rated coverage area to your room size — and then go bigger. Manufacturers rate coverage at 2 air changes per hour (ACH), but for allergy or asthma sufferers, 4-5 ACH is recommended. A purifier rated for 500 sq ft will perform better in a 300 sq ft room than one rated exactly at 300 sq ft.

CADR Rating

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is the most objective measure of a purifier's performance. It measures how quickly the unit removes smoke, dust, and pollen from the air in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Higher is better. For a 300 sq ft room, look for a CADR of at least 200.

Filter Technology

True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger — the gold standard for particle removal. H13 HEPA is a medical-grade upgrade. Activated carbon layers handle odors and VOCs. UV-C adds a sanitization layer. PECO technology (Molekule) destroys pollutants rather than just capturing them.

Noise Level

Noise matters most for bedroom use. Below 30 dB is whisper-quiet and suitable for sleeping. 30-45 dB is noticeable but acceptable for living areas. Above 50 dB on high settings is common and expected — most people run purifiers on low or auto mode overnight.

Smart Features & Connectivity

App control and auto mode are the most useful smart features. Auto mode uses air quality sensors to adjust fan speed automatically — this is the feature we recommend prioritizing. Voice control (Alexa/Google) is a nice bonus. Avoid paying a premium for smart features if you just want reliable filtration.
